I find it amusing (because I am easily amused) that this list is supposed to be in order, meaning that flying is the #1 fear. However, for me the fear becomes greater as I go down the list. I’m much more fearful of spiders than I am of flying.
Anyway I read an affirmation recently that really got me thinking:
I choose to take action in spite of my fear of failure. No matter what happens, I give myself credit for daring to try.
After I read this, I had to ask myself, why does the thought of failure scare us so much? I don’t think it’s an accident that failure and rejection are right next to each other on the list either. When I think of failing I tie it in with being rejected and no one wants to feel like they are not accepted by others. But here’s the thing: we have got to step out of that type of thinking. We’ve got to learn to accept ourselves and to hell with everyone else if they can’t recognize the awesomeness that is YOU.
Refusing to try something because it could/might/may fail is crazy. At least if you try there is a 50% chance that it will succeed. If you don’t try those odds drop to 0% rather quickly.
I’ve tried a lot of things over the years: marriage, motherhood, singing in a band, going back to school, writing, figure competitions, starting a business, etc. The list goes on and on. Some things were successful. Many were not. The only way the failures can be classified as failures is if I didn’t learn anything. Lessons are always valuable and I am thankful for them – no matter how they come about. Being able to experience so many different things over the last 50 years is a blessing and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Don’t let your fear of failure stop you from trying. The experience alone will be well worth it.
