Make it Yourself!

March 26, 2016

A few weeks ago I went to Tropical Smoothie.  I try to be mindful of what I eat and 99% of my meals are made at home, however, on this particular day I was running around like a maniac and I knew I hadn’t prepared anything so I stopped for a sandwich and a smoothie.

Before I started my fitness journey I would frequent Tropical Smoothie quite often.  For some reason or another just the word “smoothie” makes you think “healthy”.   I’m not saying it’s unhealthy, just that there are probably better choices … like to make your own smoothie at home.

I did a side-by-side comparison just to see how the TS smoothie that I purchased stacked up nutritionally against my own smoothie:

My 16oz smoothie which contains coconut water, fresh spinach, 1 banana, 1 scoop whey protein, 1 cup of frozen fruit and 1 tbsp of ground flaxseed:

Calories:  406

Protein:  27.5g

Carbs:  58g

Fat:  3.25g

The TS Smoothie (which is a 24oz serving, but I have adjusted to 16oz) contains coconut, almonds, dates, cinnamon, whole grain oats, chia seeds, roasted banana and peanut butter:

Calories:  484

Protein:  11g

Carbs:  66g

Fat:  19g

Plus + 43g of sugar

My homemade smoothie has fewer calories, less fat and more protein for satiety than the TS smoothie.  Don’t get me wrong, the TS smoothie was delicious but combined with the sandwich that I had (which exceeded 500 calories) that made for one meal that was more than 1,200 calories!  I could have made a smarter choice.

So the next time you pull up to that drive-thru, ask yourself if you could be making a smarter choice.

Leave me a comment and let me know the last time you could have made a smarter choice!
