Beware of the Dream Killers

Have you decided to make some changes?  It’s normal to want to make some changes in our lives.  Without change there is no growth.  Maybe your changes include losing weight, taking up a new hobby, changing jobs, ending a relationship, moving to a new city, etc.  And to that I say, “Good for you!”  Chances are you have been thinking about taking this step for a while and there is no better time than the present.  I do have one word of advice:

 

 

 

Have you ever met a dream killer?  They are the people that will suck the very life out of a room and make you feel some kind of way for daring to think outside the box.   You know the type.

 

The Urban Dictionary defines a dream killer like this:

 

A dream killer is she who kills your dream of becoming a success; more specifically your dream of becoming a great business success. She's often a friend, family, co-worker, fellow group member, or well-wisher. She's a snake in disguise, because she's ready to unleash her venom that drains the life from your dreams and plans. 

 

One thing I’ve learned is that not all dream killers are coming from a place of malice.  Some dream killers actually do care about you and may not be aware of the fact that with their unsupportive behavior they are actually killing your dreams.  Some dream killers can’t stand the fact that you have dreams because in their minds it shines a light on the fact they don’t have any.  And unfortunately, some dream killers just can’t stand to see other people happy because they are so miserable in their own lives.

 

Dream killers aren’t just people though.

 

Later is a dream killer.  There are seven days in a week and “Later” is not one of them.  Just do it now.

 

Doubt is a dream killer.  Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will.

 

Perfectionism is a dream killer.  Perfectionism is just fear disguised as “trying to do your best”.  Perfectionism is a myth.  If you wait until everything is perfect, you will never get started.

 

Isolation is a dream killer.  Sometimes our own thoughts can be so overwhelming that we kill our own dreams.  Seek out those who are supportive and can uplift and encourage you.

 

So, how do you deal with the dream killers?

 

  • Always keep in mind why you got started in the first place.

  • Keep your eyes on the goal and don’t allow yourself to be distracted

  • Once people have revealed themselves as dream killers, stop sharing information with them.  Don’t try to win them over.  Just do you and let your success speak for itself.

  • Don’t give up.
