Did you know that according to statistics the following issues occur in women over 40:

 

A loss in muscle tissue – starting around the age of 40, most women lose about ½ lb of muscle per year and gain at least that much in body fat!

 

Loss of strength – the elderly hold 50% of the strength compared to their youth

 

A drop in metabolic rate – resting metabolic rate drops approximately 2% per decade

 

An increase in body fat – it is not uncommon to experience an average weight gain of 10 pounds per decade and there is an increased risk for obesity related disorders such as coronary artery disease, hypertension, diabetes and osteoarthritis

 

Decrease in bone density – bone density decreases at a rate of 1% per year after the age of 35.

 

Truth:  Once I hit my 40s, my body went haywire.  My metabolism slowed down and I found myself shopping for clothing that camouflaged the fact that I no longer had a waistline.  It was strange for me.  Everything that people told me would happen in my 30s, began happening in my 40s. 

 

The good news is, I got ahead of it and decided to do something about it before it got out of hand.  I began running on a regular basis and that helped considerably and stopped any further weight gain.

 

However, once I incorporated changes to my diet and added strength training I began to feel my body get stronger and I have much more energy. 

 

Truth:  I’m stronger today in my 50s than I ever was in my 30s!

 

Why is strength training important, especially if you are over 40?

 

  • Added muscle increases the rate of fat loss compared to doing cardio alone

  • Increased strength helps with simple, everyday activities

  • Strong bones help to combat osteoporosis, improve joint stability and reduce the risk of injury
