Birthdays and New Beginnings

It was October 17, 2012. I was sitting on the shuttle leaving O’Hare Airport in Chicago traveling downtown to my hotel. It was my birthday weekend and I was celebrating! Taking this trip solo was something I had been looking forward to for a long time. I had never been to Chicago and I wanted to see the city. I planned to go on a food tour, see a show and visit the museum of science and industry. To say that I was excited was an understatement.

Then my phone rang. I looked at the number and didn’t recognize it and usually when an unfamiliar number pops up on my phone it gets ignored. Not to mention the fact that I was on a shuttle bus – I can’t stand when people take calls in public spaces. But the area code was from home and I have children so I had to answer it. That phone call changed my life forever.

The man on the other end was the man who would eventually become my personal trainer, competition coach, mentor and friend. I had called and left a message for him before I left town because I wanted to set up an appointment for an initial consultation. I needed to make a change in my life and I had FINALLY accepted the fact that I needed help. I tried for years to do it on my own and still wasn’t getting the results that I desired. I needed a plan. I needed structure and I needed accountability.

Sound familiar?

Taking that call on that bus on that day was the best thing I could have ever done. When I got back home we had the appointment and put a plan of action in place. It’s important to note that none of this would have been possible if I hadn’t been really ready to make the change. In other words, I had to get my mind right before anything else could happen.

I’d be lying if I said it was easy. It was anything BUT easy – but anything worth having is worth working for. I whined, I cried and I complained and he was patient and listened but was still very stern. I made an investment in my health and I refused to let myself (or him) down. It took me 4 months to actually see results (others say it happened quicker than that) and once I saw them I was hooked.

That’s my story. That’s how I got into the best shape of my life. That’s how I decided that I wanted to help other women the way my trainer helped me. Not with gimmicks, fads or false promises but with common sense and hard work utilizing the basic principles of proper nutrition and exercise.

I did it and so can you.
