What Will You Do Differently?

The first month of the new year is about to end. I work in a gym and I’m noticing that the attendance is already beginning decrease. What about you? Has the excitement of the new year worn off?

If you are like most people once the excitement wears off the desire to continue what you started wears off as well. Then you are once again faced with starting over. It’s a vicious cycle, right? But guess what, darling? You have the power to stop the cycle. Make this the year that you actually do something differently.

Here are some tips to actually follow through and reach your goals this time:

Grow up and get out of your feelings – I refuse to sugar coat this. Look, when there is something that you really want to accomplish you stick with it even when you don’t feel like it. Children get away with quitting because of their feelings but once you become an adult you are expected to put away childish things. If it’s worth having, then it’s worth working for. If it were easy then everyone would be doing it, right? Step out of your comfort zone, put on your big girl panties and do the darn thing! Imagine how awesome you are going to feel once you reach that goal. You can do it. You are so much stronger than you ever imagined you were.

Write it down – Not only should you write it down but you should put what you’ve written in a place where you will see it every single day. Seeing it will be a constant reminder of what you are working toward. If you write down your goal in a journal and put it away, then it is easily forgotten. Get a few 3 x 5 cards and write the goal on them with a black Sharpie and put one on your fridge, put one on your bathroom mirror and put one on the glove compartment in your car. The goal will always be in front of you and you will be motivated to get it done.

Always remember WHY – When you feel like quitting always go back to your “why”. For example, your doctor told you that you are a pre-diabetic and you need to reduce the amount of sugar in your diet and lose 15 pounds. Remember that the next time you decide that you can skip a workout or have a second piece of pie. This is not a game. This is not about fitting into a bathing suit. This is your life.

Let go of some folks – Sometimes our friends or family members aren’t on the same journey as we are and don’t understand our struggle. That cousin who is always ordering takeout or going to the club instead of the gym – you need to let them go. Love them from a distance. If they can’t get on board and support you then they need to go. Seriously. Not wanting to hurt someone’s feelings is not an excuse to live an unhealthy lifestyle. Let them go.

Tell someone what you’re working toward – Be accountable to someone. Get a workout partner, join an exercise group (either in person or online). Get around people who can encourage you and understand what you’re going through because they’ve been there. This is also a great opportunity for you to inspire and encourage someone else.

Don’t quit – No one is perfect 100% of the time. We all slip and make mistakes. Don’t allow the slip to be an excuse to give up completely. Just get up, brush yourself off and start again. It takes a while to develop healthy habits. It will not happen overnight but it will happen as long as you don’t quit.

Let this year be different. Really choose to make a difference that will last the rest of your life. Think long term and accept the fact that small, consistent actions will make the biggest difference.
